1) Fun Event: Seafood Boil - Sunday July 12 (3pm-8pm)

It was fun! Everyone had a good time slipping and sliding in the water while the music was rocking thanks to john and his misfit musical team. John and Johnny successfully produced enough food to feed an army. The night was finished off with everyone swimming at PepperTree Apartments. 2) Service Trip: Rutherford Beach Tree Planting - July 25th -26th 2009

Who: green monkeys
What: travel and excavate an illusive Louisiana beach to plant trees in an effort to preserve the wetlands and save the world!!
When: July 26th Sunday. We rendezvous at the intersection of hwy LA27 & LA 82… map included…
Where: South Cameron parish in the Mermentaw watershed.
Why?: To save the world, of coarse?

Johnny and an elite crew will be heading to Lake Charles a day early on the 25th. They will be renting a hotel room and having an evening of good green monkey fun. The crew will also be taking a detour to the Creole Nature Trail Museum . They will be departing and meeting up with the rest of our crew at 2:30pm to progress into the Rutherford Beach wonderland.



Why is our coast line important to us? Why should we bother to do anything about it? There is so much more to the regions south of Abbeville than the fact that flooding may be an issue. The face of our culture and local families will change forever. The average price of everything you touch involving meat will change forever.

Salt water intrusion will in fact be a part of our lives sooner than we think. Everything in vermillion parish is cattle, or rice and crawfish due to the heavy amounts of flooding. Now what happens when the salt water ravages all those areas? No GRASS. No grass means no cattle. No cattle means a severe raise in the price of meat. The crippling of any civilization which is indigenous is the cut off of resources which make them self sufficient. You can expect in a short time to pay twice the price for those steaks you love.

You have the choice… support the coastline or give up steak (an exaggeration, of coarse)

Down town alive was a smash hit. We had a great location. everyone pitched in to help and we demonstrated the variety of trees available. We Danced, had fun and represented our group with a style that leaves a memory in the minds of the public.
The childrens museum was Amazing! We arrived at 9am and Setup. By 10 oclock we had over 200 people rush our little operation and leave with happy saplings and happier children. They were literally pushing eachother (kinduf funny) for the trees that we were running out of (fruit trees and river birtch). We took the fraternity guys out and made another run to the BVD to reload and ran out again by 12 oclock noon.
Artwalk was HUGE!. Thousands of people walking up and down the downtown area and everyone saw our amazing display for free trees. The Schuffelers showed up as well as many of lafayette "whos who" came to ask questions, visit and of coarse plant a tree for a great cause..... Save Louisiana.We fully plan on making this event a yearly on our to do calendar and our only hope is that next year we can make it even bigger that this year!!!

Bayou Vermillion District and Trees Acadiana team up with eco-friendly Green Monkeys as well as Childrens Museum of Acadiana to giveaway free native louisiana trees! These groups will be setting up tents on JUNE 13th in front of childrens museum of acadiana from 10 am to 12 pm to give out tree samplings. The group will also join the monthly art walk and give out trees from 5pm to 8pm in front of jefferson street market. Many species are up for grabs- a person can take as many as 6 per species. Come early, many are in high demand!!

Alexander State Forest

Alexander State Forest, located in central Louisiana, was established in 1923 when the state purchased 2,068 acres from Mrs. Eloise Polk Burrows. Though originally intended to be the first of several state owned demonstration forests, today it is the only one. The forest was named in honor of M. L. Alexander, Louisiana's first commissioner of conservation.
Nine additional purchases of adjacent properties over the next 15 years expanded Alexander State Forest to its present size of approximately 8,000 acres. The multiple-use forest contains 700 acres of bottomland hardwood, 5,000 acres of southern yellow pine and the 2,250 acre Indian Creek Lake and Recreation Area.
The land was mostly barren when purchased. However, today it is an excellent example of reforestation and forest management containing about 35 million board feet of timber. Extensive tree planting was undertaken when a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp was located on the forest during 1933 - 1940. During CCC days, the enrollees, mostly World War I veterans, built the log administrative building, which is now listed on the Louisiana -National Register of Historic Places. The 175-foot Woodworth Fire Tower at the headquarters compound is believed to be the tallest fire tower in the world.
Alexander State Forest is managed under the multiple-use concept, providing a variety of benefits, including timber production, improved wildlife habitat, hunting, recreational opportunity, water and soil conservation, forest management research, and habitat for several endangered species such as the red-cockaded woodpecker. Approximately 75 percent of the state forest acreage is managed for hunting and other recreational activities.

The Indian Creek Lake and Recreation Area encompasses a 2,250 acre lake, 100 acres of developed recreation facilities and a 250 acre primitive camping area all within the Alexander State Forest. The lake, located in central Louisiana, was constructed as a joint venture of the Louisiana Forestry Commission, the Rapides Parish Police Jury, and the Lower West Red River Soil and Water Conservation District as a reservoir for agricultural irrigation in times of need and for recreation purposes.
The recreation area camping area contains 109 campsites with conventional full utility hookups, 3 beaches for swimming, bath houses, a boat launch, and 75 picnic sites. A covered pavilion within the developed area provides for groups up to 100 people. The recreation area is open year round and operates on user fees.
The primitive camping area is designated primarily for tent camping. Only parking and camping spaces are provided; there are no other facilities.
Facilities are available on a first-come basis only, except for the pavilion. It is recommended that pavilion reservations be made well in advance of intended use.
The Indian Creek Hiking Trail is a two-and-a-half mile long path through a mixed pine-hardwood forest. The trail traverses uplands and minor stream bottoms, providing access to a variety of habitats supporting numerous plant and animal species.
Indian Creek Lake offers excellent fishing for freshwater species over flooded timberland. Fishing is permitted year round and in accordance with state fishing regulations.
